In every second passed, our mind wandering the past and future, pleasant and unpleasant experiences, be it the unfinished work, planning for vacation, proud of something, recalling some memories with the deceased, or even some strategies to win a battle. Our mind is constantly changing from time to time, like an eternal smoke in the wind.
We (at least I do) lack of being in the present, controlling the mind to be at present, put full attention in what we do. We need to put our mind back in track every time it’s wandering away from our focus. The effort of putting it back in track is not easy and the result will worth it.
Controlling the mind needs a very serious training, we need to practice it everyday. One way to train our mind is meditate. Meditate is not something religious or owned by particular religion. Meditate is a practice to focus on one thing. The most simple meditation technique is to observe the breath. As every human can breath, it is doable by anyone.
Meditate is better done sitting, standing, laying down or even walking, but of course not when you are walking inside the grocery store. It is when you can focus only to observe the breath. Remember, mediate is not analyzing things nor the mind, put away judgement when observing the breath. There are known 5 hindrances when we meditate, such as:
- Sensory desire, it is when your mind want to experience pleasant things.
- Feelings of hostility, resentment, hatred and bitterness.
- Laziness, to do meditation.
- Restlessness and worry about anything that arises during meditation.
- Doubt, be it about the result, or one’s ability to do meditation.
When these hindrance arises, just acknowledge it, and put your mind back in track to observe the breath again. These hindrances arises by many factors such as past experiences, contacts from the senses during meditation, etc. The more often you do this, the more sensitive your mind will become, and you will gain more control towards your mind.
It is better to set a time at least 15 minutes (for a start) to get the maximum benefit of meditation. Over time you can increase the duration and do it regularly as you see fit. Good luck!
