If you can see a mountain then you are not in that mountain (unless you can split yourself to be present in two different places at once, which is not part of this discussion ?). By observing the mountain from a distant we can see its shape. If you are in that mountain, you might not be able to see the shape.
Most of our feelings are automatic, we are happy if things going smooth, or we are sad if it doesn’t. Those feelings are actually controllable, if be in control is one of your goals, you can practice this by observing the feelings arise anytime.
If you are happy, observe, see it thus.
If you are unhappy, observe, see it thus.
If nothing is happening, observe, see it thus.
Observing your anger, may calm you down and think clearer.
Observing your happiness, may neutralize it either.
In this way, you will not attached to feelings whether it happy or the other way. You will develop more wisdom when everything is under control.
